It’s no secret that the boiler is one of the most important appliances in the home; without it, many houses would not have hot water or heating. When something goes wrong with your boiler, it can be frustrating at the best of times - let alone when the temperatures are particularly cold outside.

Having your boiler checked regularly is an important part of establishing a boiler maintenance routine, in order to ensure that your boiler is running smoothly and to prevent any problems or sudden breakdowns further down the line. In order to save your money and to spot any problems early, it is recommended that you get your boiler serviced annually. There are a few things you can do to prepare for a boiler service to ensure that the job is carried out quickly and efficiently:

Source a reliable gas engineer

Finding a reliable gas engineer is essential; not just anyone can perform this job. If you are unsure where to start, ask friends or family members for their recommendations and be sure to read customer testimonials and online reviews to ensure that you are choosing a reliable engineer. All gas engineers should hold a gas safe qualification to safely and correctly check your boiler, so also check that your chosen gas engineer is appropriately qualified. Ask for a copy of the certificate if you are unsure.

Prepare the area

Switch your boiler off before the gas engineer arrives at your home in order to give it a chance to properly cool down. This will ensure that the engineer can get to work right away. The engineer should be able to easily access your boiler with room for their tools and equipment. Make sure that any obstacles or items are removed from the area so that the engineer has a clear space to work in.

Keep pets away

In order to complete the job efficiently, the gas engineer needs to get to work without any distractions or disruptions. If you have any pets, keep them out of the room when the engineer arrives; this will make sure that they remain safe and out of the way. Similarly, if you have children that are going to be around when the engineer arrives, keep them away from the area until the gas engineer has successfully completed the service.

What to expect from a boiler service

When the engineer arrives at your home, they will do a number of things to ensure that your heating system is working correctly and safely. Firstly, the system and its controls will be inspected. The boiler will be checked for any signs of leakage or corrosion, and the boiler’s components will be inspected. Tests will be carried out on the gas pressure to ensure that it is correct; the flue gasses will also be checked to make sure that your boiler is operating efficiently with no unsafe emissions, as well as the peripheral parts of the system such as motorised valves and pumps.
