Protect the Boiler in Your Sheffield Home During the Summer

We often associate boiler breakdowns with the winter months, and during cold spells you’ll see loads of adverts on TV about boiler maintenance. However, boilers can break down at any time of year, and yes, this includes during the summer heatwave. Boilers don’t just heat your home, they’re often the source of hot water, so suddenly you might find yourself needing gas engineers, so you can wash up and take a shower. While Sheffield doesn’t usually get the longest of heatwaves, here are a few tips for boiler care during the summer months.

Turn your heating on, even in the summer

Turning a boiler off for long periods is not good for the unit, and can mean parts seize up, so when it’s switched on again, it breaks down. Leaving your heating off can cause problems with your plumbing, so turn your heating on for short bursts, even during the hot weather. This will ensure the parts are kept moving and functioning.

Get a boiler service each year

Most of us don’t think about our boiler much until it breaks down, and then we realise how much we rely on it. You can help avoid break downs by booking an annual boiler service, and the summer is the perfect time to do so, as plumbers tend to be less busy. Boiler services vary, but can include work such as:

·        Visual inspection of the boiler

·        Shutting down and inspecting and cleaning the flue

·        Checking hoses and filters

·        Checking pressure

·        Providing safety paperwork

Prevention is always better than cure when it comes to appliances, and a quick service can save you money down the line, as you can avoid those emergency call-outs and costly repairs.

Bleed your radiators

Some people wait until the winter to bleed their radiators, but it’s easier to do in summer, as you won’t have had your radiators switched on for a while. It’s easy to do, you just need a radiator key, and there are step by step guides online. If you notice your radiators still have cold spots or are making a lot of noise, bring in gas contractors who will be able to check them over and ensure it’s not a problem with your boiler.

Have a power flush

If you are having boiler issues such as slow heating or noise, then power flushing can help it run better. This is often done when a boiler installation is carried out, but can be done whenever you want, and summer is an excellent time as you don’t have to worry about being cold while your boiler is having the work done. Power flushing gets rid of deposits and build-up, which can help prevent boiler breakdowns once the cold weather hits.
